How to Overcome Fear of Rejection

People feel lonely because of many reasons. Perhaps they do not have enough friends, or they are not accepted by the people they try be friends with, or they do not know how to get close to the people they already know. Humans are social creatures, but not are all equally socially accepted. Some end up being socially rejected, and some have difficulty even trying.
The first step to overcoming fear of rejection is to realize that everyone gets lonely or feels scared of rejection at some point. Just because you feel that way doesn’t mean that there is anything wrong with you. Our vulnerability to loneliness increases when we are making transitions.
The second step is to build up your self-confidence. Take yourself out on a date to do everything that you would normally do with a partner or a friend, whether it be a nice dinner or a movie. Once you are able to enjoy your own company, others are more likely to enjoy it too. Don’t be self-conscious – people are not focusing on your faults, they are more likely to be obsessing about their own.
The third step is to make an effort to get involved in anything where you will meet people. If you are very shy, joining a support group for those with social anxiety may be a good place to start even if it is online. Volunteering at a local charity can help as well. Look for activities which interest you and go with no expectations whatsoever. That way you can enjoy yourself regardless what happens.
The fourth and last step is to take the initiative in social relationships whenever you can. Overcome your fear of rejection by forcing yourself to take the first step. Be the first to say hello or good morning, smile – take it one step further by asking someone if they want to chat, or go for coffee. You must always show an interest in people before they will show interest in you, if they ever do.
Overcoming the fear of rejection is a long, painstaking process. But once you take the first step towards making friends with yourself, the rest should easily follow.
